A spinal cord injury can be devastating both physically and emotionally. According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, nearly 12,000 spinal cord injuries (SCI) occur each year in the United States. A spinal cord injury occurs when a traumatic even results in damage to the cells inside the spinal cord or severs the nerve tract that relays signals up and down the spinal cord. Many of these injuries are the result of falls, car accidents, workplace accidents, sports injuries and bullet or knife wounds.

When negligence results in an innocent victim becoming a paraplegic or quadriplegic, they deserve the best care and appropriate compensation. No amount of money can make up for an injury that results in paralysis, but it is important to engage an attorney that understands the costs associated with such an injury. Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal Cord Injuries are divided into two different types:

  • Complete injuries
  • Incomplete injuries

Complete Spinal Cord Injuries

A complete spinal cord injury is the loss of sensation and motor ability. This is caused by bruising, loss of blood, or pressure on the spinal cord. Severed spinal cords are rare. A complete spinal cord injury results in total loss of sensation and movement below the site of injury.

Incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries

An incomplete spinal cord injury does not result in complete loss of movement and sensation below the injured area. Incomplete spinal cord injuries can be further classified into:

  • Anterior Cord Syndrome– Results from damage to the motor and sensory pathways in the anterior areas of the spinal cord. Effects include loss of movement and overall sensation.
  • Central Cord Syndrome– Results from injury to the center of the cervical area of the spinal cord. The damage affects the corticospinal tract which carries signals between the spinal cord and the brain in order to control bodily movement.
  • Brown-Sequard Syndrome– Results from injury to the right or left side of the spinal cord. On the side in which the injury occurred, movement and sensation are lost below the level of the injury. On the side opposite of the injury, temperature and sensation of pain ore lost.
  • Injuries to individual nerve cells Results in loss of sensory and motor functions in the area of the body to which the injured nerve root corresponds.
  • Spinal Contusions- The most common type of spinal cord injury. The spinal cord is bruised but not severed. Inflammation and bleeding occurs near the injury as a result of the injury.
